    Goodday Mr. Boonut:

I found our exchange about the Sylk line I purchased from you last year and thought I might respond now that I have fished it with several rods under varying conditions. I think your assessment offered very accurate advice so there really is little to add but much to confirm.

The Sylk DT 4F with the tip cut back is a specialized line with some positive attributes and some llimitations. It was my favorite winter line. It is supple in the coldest weather I can stand to fish and as a mountain man yourself, you know that can be pretty darn cold in January in Wyoming. Brrrr. I feel it is a light 4 wt and it worked well on my favorite 4-- a Mike Brooks Permacane 7 1/2. I liked the color, especially in very clear waters and the small diameter which I felt spooked fewer fish. I ended up using it with a furled leader which seemed to help my presentations. Handled pretty well in light breezes but like any 4 wt, is frustrating in a wind. It is always windy in Wyoming, but winter mornings and evenings on protected waters when it is breezy. Then things worked well.

NEGATIVES: I found that it was a prone to sinking, especially in the first 3 feet despite repeated cleanings and treatment. This is okay with soft hackles and nymphs, especially on small clear streams, but it is a limitation when switching or even starting with small dries. Also, I found I had some distance limitations with it as it seemed to have a distict range that it worked well but performance fell off quickly both shorter than 20 feet and beyond 35 or 40 feet.

All in all a good experience. I hve it wrapped on my little OS Zephyr and have fished with it about 15 times. Fun. Thanks for the experince and am glad you convinced me to try it.

    Hey Boo:

I got it wound on a reel but have not fished it yet. I put it on my little Flycast. I must be a creature of habit as I keep using my TT and fiddling with leaders and tippets.
I did think about trying it last weekend on my trip to "Wiley Devil Creek" and tried a new reel with my trusty 5wt TT, but got too absorbed in trying to catch fish. I had limited success; should have gone back and tried the Sylk.

Thanks for the additional info. I have a neurotic relationahip with a spring creek here and that new soft line may shake up my technique a bit. There are fish but they are wiley devils.
I'll try to report in a few weeks after I've given it a fair trial.
